Deep in the heart of Texas you can come across a common sight: a cowboy leading his horse. It doesn’t take much to guide the horse, just a very small bit and bridle. The horse’s body follows where led with just a tiny pull here or a small pull there. The Word gives us such a clear picture of the tongue guiding the whole body. Such a small member, yet the tongue boasts great things.
The tongue is a powerful part of the body. Scripture tells us that a wholesome tongue can be a tree of life, and with it we can bless, praise, and encourage. The tongue of the wise brings healing and makes knowledge appealing.
However, Scripture also tells us that the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. It is an unruly evil. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men. Matthew 15:16 tells us that “what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.”
“All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”(James 3:7-8) No one can tame the tongue: such a small yet powerful thing!
I pray that this weekend we can get a clear understanding of the power of the tongue. May the Lord give us grace to “set a guard, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3). May we choose to use it to bless each other and the Lord Jesus Christ!
