Thankfulness
Overflowing with Thankfulness
Overflowing with Thankfulness

“We live in a day, today, where it’s very difficult for us to rise above the creeping, encroaching, powerful culture that surrounds us, and we live in a thankless age. This has got to be the most thankless age there ever was. On the one hand, you have people who have more than they’ve ever had, but you also have people who know there’s more yet that they don’t have. And so no matter what they have, they don’t have everything they could have, and so they don’t have everything they want, and so it breeds a terrible kind of thanklessness. Consequently, the New Testament injunctions for us to be thankful in this culture need to be reminded over and over again to the people of God so that we don’t fall into the patterns of those around us.” ~John MacArthur

Don’t those words paint a picture of the world we are living in this very day? Yet John MacArthur wrote this 26 years ago! In the 26 years since his writing, I would argue that we as a people are less thankful, more complaining, ever whining, and really ungrateful!

We find in Romans 1:21 that about the ungodly it says, “although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful,…”

How do we stand out as the people of God? What distinguishes ourselves from the ungodly? We do this by glorifying God and being thankful. He has called us to be a thankful people. First Thessalonians 5:18: “In everything give thanks for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Thankfulness may seem like a small thing to do, and that it’s not very important. “We should remind ourselves that thanksgiving is the essence of Christian living and attitude.” ~ John MacArthur. In light of what God has done by sending His Son to this world, shouldn’t we at least be thankful for that?

This weekend, we will remind each other what it means to be thankful. We will learn why we should be thankful. We’ll discover how to be thankful. We will consider the words we use to be thankful. We will look at being thankful in times of turbulence. And we will recognize that we need to be a thankful people.

May we cast our gaze on the One who deserves our thanks, and may we turn into a people Overflowing with Thankfulness.
